The Scottish Geology Festival: Online Talk Geological Thin Section Preparation
3rd November 2021
Logitech recently worked with The Scottish Geology Trust to take part in the The Scottish Geology Festival. We provided an online talk on the preparation of geological thin sections. – our Process Development Engineer, Tom McGroggan, took participants through our eight steps to success in preparing thin sections of geological materials.
Participants were taken through each step and shown each piece of equipment used throughout the process. These steps are:
Step 1: Slabbing and trimming of field specimen on he GTS1 Saw
Step 2: Impregnation of soft, porous or friable materials on the IU30 Impregnation Unit
Step 3: First face lapping on a Logitech precision lapping & polishing system (PM6 / LP70)
Step 4: Preparation of slides to uniform thickness on a Logitech precision lapping & polishing system (PM6 / LP70)
Step 5: Bonding specimen to slides using the Logitech Bonding Jigs on a Hotplate
Step 6: Thinning bonded specimens using the GTS1 Thin Section Saw
Step 7: Lapping specimen to chosen thickness – PM6/LP70/DL44
Step 8: (Optional) Polishing specimens – PM6/LP70 WG6 Polishing Head
Participants for insight in to routes to success in the process of Geological Thin Sections, overviews of the systems, how they work and how they are utilised in the process as well as details on consumable products used. It was great to see so many participants interested in the production of thin sections. We were thrilled to have taken part in the festival and will endeavour to partake in similar programmes in the future. So if you missed it, make sure to keep an eye on our event page for the details of our next talk.
If you were unable to partake in the event, please head to this page to view our video detailing the step-by-step process of geological thin section preparation, download a presentation and Q&A’s from the session.
